Jackie has now started searching through boxes of still unpacked photographs of our famous and successful Dartmoor ponies from the past, which may be of interest to Dartmoor owners and breeders, old and new.
BELOW IS A PRELIMINARY LIST OF MANY FAMOUS RIDDEN DARTMOOR PONIES OWNED BY US FROM 1972 ONWARDS.
Although we bred a few Dartmoor ponies, our main interest was RIDDEN DARTMOORS. All our stallions, most of our mares and all our geldings were versatile and very successful ridden ponies also very much members of the family. We will be adding photographs as the days go by. Many lovely photographs are missing, having been lent, borrowed etc. Anyone reading this, we would love to receive any photographs from the old days and further news of the ponies.

CHALLABOROUGH PEPI Our first pure bred Dartmoor Pony ( photo 1973)

Pepi was bought in 1972 from Jim Woods for both me and my son Barnaby aged 3yrs to ride. He was a lovely kind patient pony and was placed 3rd in the ridden Dartmoor class at our first visit to Ponies of Britain. Pepi was very versatile, he took Barnaby into lead rein Fancy Dress, Showing and Gymkhanas and other open ridden classes with me and never put a foot wrong. (note the plaits and navy jackets!)

Waveny Joker, 11.3hh Grey stallion. Joker was later gelded and went on to teach many children to ride.

Oatlands Tom Tinker, 11.2hh bay gelding, bought as a 3yr old in 1973 for my elder daughter Henrietta's 3rd Birthday. Tinker was bought from Dr. and Mrs. King, who produced many young ridden Dartmoor geldings and put the Ridden Dartmoor to the forefront when very few were being properly schooled and shown. Tinker, having taught my young daughter so much, winning many prizes in leading rein classes and open riddens with me, later went to a friend's young daughter in Cambridgeshire, to do the same.

Tinker with Henrietta waiting for the Costume Class at Ponies of Britain 1974. Both Henrietta and Tinker were both only four years old.

Sherberton Drink Up, 'Sherbie' was the dam of our first registered dartmoor foal Wenden Junket, a black filly by Springs Juniper. 'Junket' was bought from us by a neighbour who was determined to own her. She spent all her days in that same home.' Sherbie' was broken and safely hacking out within a few days of being backed.Within 2 weeks she was winning a big lead rein class at the Northern Dartmoor Show and went on to be Reserve Champion Ridden Dartmoor! She had never been in a show ring before and Alice was 3yrs old. Sherbie was a very safe lead rein and first pony.

'Sherbie' ridden by 3yr old Alice. Note the turnout! This was totally correct in those days!

Hayborough Sara, 11.2hh bright bay mare, won the barren mare class, the Dartmoor lead rein and Reserve Ridden Dartmoor at the DPS Breed Show with us in about 1978. We owned Sara twice!

Springs Juniper, Black stallion 12.2hh. A pony I will never forget! Bought from Margaret Furness (SENRUF) He was so kind and gentle, safe around my 3 young children and ridden by us all. As well as his VERY successful ridden carreer with us including lead rein showing, gymkhana, handy pony and fancy dress with the children, I rode him in open ridden,WHP, cross country and hunted him with the Belvoir Hunt. He won championships at county standard including wins at both the Northern and Southern Dartmoor breed Shows also Reserve Overall M and M ridden at Ponies of Britain.

Ridden winner at the Northern Dartmoor Pony Show in 1977

Brandsby Sorcerer
Black gelding 12.2hh. I bought Sorcerer from June Little as a 3/rising 4yr old. He was easy to break and he won first time out under saddle( he had already won in youngstock classes with June Little) At about his 4th ridden class ever, he qualified for Olympia, the first year it was held, he was only 4yrs old!
The same year that Shilstone Rocks Quercina qualified and came 4th with Lizzie Loriston-Clarke (read more about 'Quercy' below!)
Sorcerer went on to qualify for Olympia in 1979 and 1980 and 1981 with us.

In the picture above he was winning the Best Dartmoor at Olympia in 1980.[ ridden by Jackie. He was then sold to Baronie McEough who went on to continue his winning ways.

Brandsby Simon, black gelding, 11.3hh full brother to Brandsby Sorcerer. Simon was a real child's safe pony. easy to break and took everything in his stride. He lacked just one thing ! Sorcerer's presence!!, Simon won at some smaller shows and was a very sweet and useful allrounder.

Shilstone Rocks Quercina !!!
bright bay mare, 12.2hh Most people will certainly remember this pony ? 'Quercy' pronounced 'Querchie' to those who new her, was previously owned by Mrs. Alison Taylor and beautifully ridden by Lizzie Loriston- Clarke.'Quercy' had won almost all there was to win as a ridden Dartmoor, produced plaited, which was 'normal' in those days (as plaiting was optional), she had won the NPSCountry Life cup on at least one occasion and every other accolade a Dartmoor could win. I bought Quercy from Alison Taylor for Alice,my

then 7 yr old daughter to ride and show. She was guaranteed safe for a small child off the lead and was very well schooled! We adored her, Alice rode her at home and occasionally out hacking, she was a gem of a pony to ride and handle, but, she was a real Jeckyl and Hyde at shows! One minute a perfect pony, doing her job kindly as asked, then the next minute she could go from a standstill to flying through the air like Pegasus. This 'game' she' played' at shows we never could explain.
She particularly chose perfect moments for this behaviour, ie having been pulled in in first place at a major show, she would stand perfectly in front of the judge, then just leap forward, if she didn't do it then, she would wait until the championship, wait until the judge was about to pull her forward as champion, and leap then!
We loved Quercy dearly, but the erratic behaviour at shows became very alarming, she was the same with adult or child rider, but never at home! My friend Julia Goodman, who owned Huntspath Heath at the time, also liked Quercy, and her children had often ridden her with us. Julia couldn't resist the 'Quercy' challenge and eventually asked to buy her for her daughter Charlotte. Quercy and Charlotte had many wins, as well as many 'please can you take your pony out of the ring dear'.

ULVERSCROFT CARN
'Sing a Song of Sixpence'
Ulverscroft Carn seen here winning the costume class at Ponies of Britain in 1979 with Henrietta and Alice.

SORRY, this is one of our Shetlands !!

He is in the wrong 'department!'

White Willows Wizard, 12hh black gelding, yet another very special pony, loved by all who ever owned or met him, he gave anyone the most beautiful ride, if only he had been a horse he would have made an international dressage horse. Wizard only had one fault, he thought that HE knew his 'show' better than any rider, so it was best to let him 'think so' ! He won so much and gave such pleasure to everyone. Sadly Wizard must have the record for just missing qualifying for Olympia he was Reserve Champion so many times, especially with the Roeves family!

Winning yet another ridden championship in1981

Vean Jentyl, 11hh black by the famous Jentyl. Sweet kind little pony.but the only Dartmoor we owned that put in deliberate little bucks, so the only Dartmoor we had that anybody fell off!

Hisley Cognac, bay stallion, owned briefly by us, quiet and easy to hack out, another lovely sensible Dartmoor stallion.

Senruf Grenadier, bought as a yearling, delightful small dark brown gelding with the most appealing head. We showed him in hand successfully in youngstock classes. We broke him to ride and used him mainly as a lead rein pony. You couldn't fault 'Grennie' !

Allendale Exorcist, 12hh black stallion. Never to be forgotten! Olympia finalist when owned by Mary Holden and ridden by my schoolfriend Karen Cutler. Famous sire, lovely temperament and safe ride. What more can one say, thank you 'Spider'

Winning again ridden by Jackie in 1986

Hummingbird,[owned twice]Cruachan Dunnock [owned twice], Wenden Butterfly and Springs Hypericum!
