REBEL My own New Forest pony REBEL AGAIN

Enthusiastic as ever, in 1963 giving my 8 day old baby brother Tim his first riding lesson on Rebel

At last in about 1960,after years of waiting, my 'non horsey' parents gave in and bought me my first pony 'Rebel', which he was! The kindest pony to look after, but a real handful to ride, with no brakes! It was on Rebel that I started to compete. Firstly at gymkhanas and then Show Jumping and Cross Country. He was an amazingly talented pony, even taking me into open Horse show jumping although only barely 13.2hh. He was a real 'winning machine', I have still kept all his rosettes. He was well known on the hunting field for jumping anything in his path and for giving even the Master a lead over a fence or ditch and I was renowned for getting into trouble for overtaking the whole field as I really had NO brakes! I had Rebel for about 7yrs until after I left school and home, when sadly he had to be sold.

CHALLABOROUGH PEPI Our first pure bred Dartmoor Pony ( photo 1973) FRITHERSDEN FOXY My first pure bred Exmoor pony

Pepi was bought in 1972 from Jim Woods for both me and my son Barnaby aged 3yrs to ride. He was a lovely kind patient pony and was placed 3rd in the ridden Dartmoor class at our first visit to Ponies of Britain. Pepi was very versatile, he took Barnaby into lead rein Fancy Dress, Showing and Gymkhanas and other open ridden classes with me and never put a foot wrong. (note the plaits and navy jackets!)

Foxy winning the Exmoor youngstock cup, went on to be Reserve Exmoor Champion at Ponies of Britain in 1975.

ULVERSCROFT CARN at P.O.B 1979 WHATTON EARL MARSHALL P.O.B 1981

We were so lucky to find this exceptional pony for my younger daughter Alice. 'George' as he was known was probably our first very successful Welsh Sec A . He took Alice from First Ridden to Open Ridden, through to cradle stakes, M and M workers, Nursey Stakes and Show Jumping, then taught her to ride side saddle and jump side saddle very successfully. He also was a safe hack, loved Pony Club, gymkhanas and cross country. The photo above was taken at Ponies of Britain in 1981 when having already won prizes in all his classes, he was a very creditable 6th in the OPEN side saddle workers under 15hh. 'George' was only 11.2hh and was the smallest pony and Alice the youngest rider but they had to jump the same course as the 15 hh! 'George' aged 16 yrs went from us to Martha Hindley, daughter of Jeremy Hindley and then to a cousin of the family, where I hope he ended his days?

My daughter Henrietta's first open ridden class( there were no 'First Ridden' classes then, so straight from lead rein to Open!) She hadn't even done a 'show' before, so we told her to 'copy' the others! BUT she was pulled in FIRST. Looking concerned, she went out and did a perfect figure of eight at trot and managed to canter round the back and bow to the judge. We were so pleased but the pony standing in second place was Bard Of Transy ! Who I had not seen before as we were new to showing Shetlands at this level. Bard after a lovely show obviously went on to win the class, but Henrietta and Carn went to 2nd place! A triumph for both pony and daughter! Many of you will know that Bard Of Transy (known as 'Ting') went on a few years later to Olympia.

TWYFORD GRENADE Welsh Section A (photo 1982) FORLAN TARGET Welsh Section A (photo1984)

Twyford Grenade (Shrimp)from the famous Twyford 'G' line, was Alice's second Welsh A gelding. Formally he had been a very well known BSPS open lead rein and first ridden show pony, winning at the BSPS Championships. 'Shrimp' did everything with Alice that 'George' had done, but with his extra presence he won so much in every sphere, it is hard to remember! We used him almost entirely as an open M and M ridden and WHP.Alice continued her side saddle and started open dressage competitions on him too, as there were no childrens dressage competitions, he was always the smallest pony!
Forlan Targett, Alice's 3rd Welsh Sec A gelding was a real 'find'. Jean Sutton saw him at Hay on Wye as a 4yr old stallion and bought him for us as she thought we would like him, for 90gns ! We had him gelded soon after he arrived, and within a month, Alice (with a little help from me) was happily riding and competing on him. As it was winter his first time out was novice show jumping, which he took to in no time and loved it. He was soon winning small jumping classes which were great practise for his many future championships as an M and M worker and open ridden small breeds. In 1984 Targett was 2nd overall ridden Section A in the Welsh Pony and Cob Society performance awards.
NPS Display and Musical Ride JULY 1985

Line up of the 12 Breed representatives at The Royal Show. What a wonderful week we had! Third from left and pictured right Castellau Simwnt my Welsh A. I cannot remember all the others, but Bard of Transy (Shetland)ridden by March Rogers was my partner and Towy Valley Snapdragon was the Welsh B.
LORD LOVELL winning at EANPS (photo 1982) CASTELLAU SIMWNT Welsh Section A

The only Highland pony I have owned, but what a pony, he was a wonderful well schooled ride and although only 13.2hh. He always held his own against the bigger large breeds and won most of his classes! Above: My wonderful Castellau Simwnt at Ponies of Britain jumping yet another clear to add to his many successes as a champion M and M WHP

THIS IS A NEW GALLERY OF SOME HISTORY OF OUR PONIES FROM THE PAST, SOME DETAILS MAY BE SLIGHTLY INCORRECT AS MUCH IS COMING FROM MEMORY! PLEASE COME BACK TO SEE MORE AND IF YOU HAVE ANY FURTHER DETAILS TO HELP ME WITH THIS GALLERY OR JOG MY MEMORY, THERE IS MUCH MORE TO COME, LIKE OUR PONIES AT OLYMPIA, IF ANYONE HAS OLD PHOTOGRAPHS TO ADD I WOULD BE VERY GRATEFUL.

(I am also starting a separate new DARTMOOR gallery about all our ridden Dartmoors from 1972 onwards. If anyone has old photos or news of any Dartmoor ponies previously bred, owned/shown by me or my family I would love to hear from you. Jackie
